Start at the A.T.’s highest point and ride the longest stretch above 5,000 ft.
Overview
This trip covers the longest stretch of trail consistently above 5,000 feet. We begin at Clingmans Dome, 6,643 feet and the highest point on the entire Appalachian Trail, and spend each night in communal backcountry shelters.
Dinner is a highlight on every trip, and the dark skies here are some of the darkest in the Southeast.
Day 1
Orientation in Gatlinburg, then a mostly downhill 3.1 miles from the A.T.’s highest point, with relaxing time at camp.
Day 2
A full day traversing multiple peaks with great views. 7.1 miles.
Day 3
Continue west along the crest toward the famous balds. 6–9 miles.
Day 4
Descend to our pickup point and shuttle back to Gatlinburg.
Routes and statistics may vary with backcountry site availability and weather.
After booking you’ll receive preparation guidance, a packing list, and meeting instructions. All participants sign a waiver, and multi-day guests complete a short registration and health form.
